UCI config migration across OpenWrt releases

Hi all,

when UCI configuration options change between releases, is there an 
established convention to provide migration support? In other words: is 
it generally safe for users to keep their existing configuration files 
when upgrading OpenWrt?

I could not find definitive documentation on this. Based on forum 
discussions, the rough rule of thumb seems to be:

* For minor updates (e.g. 24.10.5 → 24.10.6), configurations can usually
   be kept.
* For major updates (e.g. 24.10.x → 25.12.1), recreating the
   configuration is recommended.

However, many of those discussions are quite old, so I am wondering 
whether this guidance is still accurate today.
