I wouldn't go as far as forcing the numbers there. This was mostly about whether it should be lan1 on one device and ethernet1 on the other.

Even with option 2, I think starting at lan0 or lan1 or lan2 on different devices would be fine IMO, just like we had port numbers "defined" by vendor order beforehand.
