Thanks for pointing that out after getting me in :-) Anyway, in the 
meantime I found a more recent discussion on linux-kernel [1]. It still 
seems to circle around the interface. I realize that my proposal here, 
building upon the existing interface, may only be a temporary workaround.

I am not sure whether I really want to enter the interface discussion. I 
have to sleep over it.
