I've encountered the same issue with my x86_64 build using the imagebuilder. I was able to attach a serial console and noticed that no kernel modules were loaded.

Linux OpenWrt 5.4.74 #0 SMP Tue Nov 3 17:34:10 2020 x86_64 GNU/Linux
root at OpenWrt:/# lsmod
root at OpenWrt:/lib/modules/5.4.70# modprobe e1000e
no module folders for kernel version 5.4.74 found
root at OpenWrt:/lib/modules/5.4.70# modprobe e1000
no module folders for kernel version 5.4.74 found


Attempts to manually load the kernel modules also failed, as can be seen above.
