As David noted, slavery had deep and ugly history way before the discovery
of the Western Hemisphere. We have enslaved each other, not to mention
that the enslavement of Europeans was a significant part of the economy of
the Ottoman Empire, too.
It never starts with camps and weapons, it always starts with restricting
what to say and think followed up with labeling and dehumanizing others.
It's really sad that a lot of people don't notice the synergies between
the current cancel culture movement and other autocratic movements from
the past. Those who burn books, favor censorship and restrict freedom of
speech were never the good guys.
I understand you have born on the luckier part of the fence and only had
to face the brutality of one extreme - we had the "pleasure" to experience
both. Anyone from Central Europe will be way more edgy regarding this
topic, so being respectful here includes never weaponizing the tragedy of
millions and ignore the tragedy of million others'.
