I would keep INTERFACES for br-lan etc. its from the routers perspective the interfacing logical unit.

i would like to enforce capital letters for INTERFACENAMES
and everything else not....

kernel specific stuff is another logical step down the rabbit hole.

perhaps i misunderstood smth myself.
