I'm just guessing here:
The latest kernels have an option to "automagically" declare any
partition on the internal flash which is labeled "rootfs" as root
device, no matter what you tell them....
I haven't read your guide thoroughly, but it may be the case that this
conflicts, I also stumbled across this a few weeks ago, when trying to
boot from an external device in a slightly different setting.
do a "make kernel_menuconfig" , look in the drivers->mtd section and
switch that option off, maybe that helps.
