[OpenWrt-Users] how are kernel patches applied to the kernel, and in what order?

  i'm unclear on how kernel patches are applied to the kernel, given
the number of kernel patch directories. for example, if i'm building
a system for my brcm47xx unit and selecting a 2.6.23.16 kernel, i can
see a number of possible patch directories, all under target/linux:

  * generic-2.6/patches
  * generic-2.6/patches-2.6.23
  * brcm47xx/patches-2.6.23

so which ones actually apply? i'm guessing the last two, but i'm not
sure. and in what order so that they're cumulative? thanks.
