They do have the 500gP online, so unless you need it today, I'd go for it.
As for the rest of your question: the kamikaze with kernel 2.4 should
work just fine (I used it recently in a wl700gE). And the b43 driver in
the kamikaze-2.6 is reported to work in some cases. Haven't tried
it yet, tho.

the time and regrets it: the wifi is dead and the extra
USB port would have saved me a hub. But the wrtsl54gs
is nicely compact, so it's not a bad choice either."
