[OpenWrt-Users] how is the image created

I'm a bit lost in these Makefiles on trunk.

I'm trying to see how the process of creating the image that
flash/upload onto your router is built.  Presumably there is a directory
tree under which the build process places all of the files it wants on
the installable image and then it creates a filesystem image (i.e. a
sqaushfs filesystem) with.

Where does this process of creating the directory tree begin?
