i typically do that in between builds, just to play it safe.

now there's an issue -- what exactly does that do, and why is it not
documented in the README? if you check that README at the top of the
svn checkout tree, its first part reads:
"Please use "make menuconfig" to configure your appreciated
configuration for the toolchain and firmware.
You need to have installed gcc, binutils, patch, bzip2, flex, bison,
make, gettext, pkg-config, unzip, libz-dev and libc headers.
Simply running 'make' will build your firmware.
It will download all sources, build the cross-compile toolchain,
the kernel and all choosen applications."
note that there is absolutely no mention of "make package/symlinks".
so if that's a crucial step, it really should be mentioned there.
in any event, i've tried to build images for a number of different
targets and, without fail, every one of those builds has failed for
one reason or another. so, if someone has a configuration for a build
that actually completes successfully, i'd like to see it.
(preferably a build for a WRT54GL but, at this point, i'd be happy
just seeing a successful build for any target whatever.)
i'm sure there's a reason why my builds are failing, but it's not at
all obvious since i'm following the instructions as carefully as i
can. thanks for all the help so far.
