At the risk of going further down the rabbit hole/off topic, if you set the cpu_has_rixi to 1 in  target/linux/ath79/patches-4.14/0014-MIPS-ath79-finetune-cpu-overrides.patch and with PKG_ASLR_PIE [=y]
