  thanks, that clears things up immensely. once i think i understand
this completely, i'll adjust the appropriate wiki pages to explain
this for the next poor newbie who tries to file an issue. :-)

  whoops, hang on, i just noticed that my github report which was
closed as inappropriate was just reopened as it apparently relates to
the "devel/gcc" package after all:

  i'll figure all this out eventually, thanks for your patience. and i
apologize for my earlier snippiness -- tired, cranky and just wanting
to get a build out of this. :-(
